I have been motivated to write this blog after speaking with incredible Champions of Compassion who are feeling burnt out!

Today, let's tackle a thought-provoking question: Why don't we, as business leaders, see the importance of self-compassion? Why don't we view it as an integral part of our leadership journey and a crucial support for our performance? This topic hits close to home for me because I've constantly struggled with the belief that self-performance should come at the sacrifice of my own needs and the well-being of those I deeply care for. So, let's dive into this discussion and explore why self-compassion often goes unnoticed in the realm of business leadership.

The Constant Struggle:

In the fast-paced and competitive world of business, it's easy to get caught up in the constant pursuit of success. We set high standards for ourselves and our teams, always striving for excellence, which is often someone else's KPI or target put on us. But amidst this drive for achievement, we often overlook the importance of self-compassion and the toll it takes on our health, emotions, and relationships.

The Sacrifice:

We convince ourselves that sacrificing our own needs and personal time is necessary to reach our goals. We believe it's just a temporary sacrifice and that we'll make up for it later. However, neglecting self-compassion can have catastrophic consequences that impact not only our well-being but also our overall success as business leaders. The thing about tomorrow, is that it never arrives!

The Impact on Health and Well-being:

When we relentlessly push ourselves without giving ourselves time to recharge, chronic stress and burnout become all too familiar. Our physical and mental health suffer, putting us at risk for heart disease, high blood pressure, and a weakened immune system. Neglecting self-care disrupts our sleep patterns, eating habits, and overall well-being, leading to a decline in our ability to perform at our best. When I started out on my leadership journey, at the tender age of 20, I never allocated myself time for me. I left behind the things I loved to do and the people I loved to be with. As I worked 80-100 hours per week, I had a very poor diet, did little or no exercise, and had zero downtime, is it any surprise that I was diagnosed with cancer at the age of 26?

The Emotional Toll:

The pressure we put on ourselves to constantly perform takes an immense emotional toll. Anxiety, self-doubt, and the fear of failure become constant companions on our leadership journey. This negative cycle of self-criticism and judgment chips away at our confidence and decision-making abilities, hindering our ability to lead effectively and build positive relationships with our teams.

The Strained Connections:

Neglecting self-compassion not only affects us individually but also strains our personal relationships. By prioritising work over our own needs, we find ourselves working long hours, emotionally unavailable, and neglecting important personal commitments. This leads to feelings of isolation and resentment from our loved ones, impacting the quality of our connections outside of work.

Embracing Self-Compassion:

Now that we've recognised the consequences of neglecting self-compassion, let's explore why it's vital for our success and well-being as business leaders.

Taking Care of Ourselves:

When we prioritise self-compassion, we create space for self-care and reflection. By recharging and maintaining a healthier work-life balance, we improve our overall well-being. This, in turn, helps us handle challenges with greater resilience, make better decisions, and lead our teams with clarity and empathy.

Enhancing Emotional Intelligence:

Self-compassion is closely tied to emotional intelligence, a trait essential for successful leadership. By practicing self-compassion, we become more attuned to our emotions and better able to understand and empathise with others. This fosters a positive and supportive work environment, leading to increased engagement and productivity from our employees.

Strengthening Relationships:

Prioritising self-compassion extends beyond the workplace. By taking care of our own needs, we show up fully for our loved ones and cultivate healthier connections. When we practice self-compassion, we're more likely to extend that compassion to others, creating a positive ripple effect in our personal and professional relationships.

Incorporating Self-Compassion into Our Leadership Style:

So, how can we make self-compassion a priority in our lives as business leaders? Here are some practical strategies to consider:

1. Practice mindfulness: Take a few moments each day to connect with the present moment, observing your thoughts and emotions without judgement. I now schedule my daily lessons from 'A Course in Miracles', every morning before sending an uplifting message to our Champions of Compassion.

2. Set realistic expectations: Avoid setting impossibly high standards for yourself and others. Embrace the learning process and understand that setbacks and mistakes are part of the journey. Embrace this as life and don't judge it.

3. Make self-care a priority: Engage in activities that nourish your physical, mental, and emotional well-being. Whether it's exercise, meditation, hobbies, or spending quality time with loved ones, find what works for you.

4. Cultivate a supportive inner voice: Replace self-criticism with self-compassion. Treat yourself with kindness and understanding, just as you would a close friend or colleague. Release yourself from self-doubt and remove the thought that self-compassion is selfish.

5. Seek support: Reach out to us if you need more guidance and support on your self-compassion journey.

As business leaders, it's time we recognise the crucial need for self-compassion. By embracing self-compassion, we enhance our well-being, emotional intelligence, and relationships. Let's shift our perspective and acknowledge that being compassionate leaders doesn't mean sacrificing success; it means fostering a healthier, more fulfilling path to achieving it. So, let's prioritise self-compassion and create a positive impact on ourselves, our teams, and the world around us.

Stay blessed! x
